TRANSMISSION OF WARNING MESSAGES TO THE POPULATION USING TERRESTRIAL DIGITAL RADIO

The arrival of digital radio broadcasting has enabled to significantly improve the services in the area of warning on various events. This article analyzes the possibilities of using terrestrial digital radio standards for the dissemination of warning messages to the population in a certain territory.
Two basic digital broadcast standards, namely Digital Radio Mondial (DRM) and Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) are consequently analyzed in terms of the possibility of broadcasting warning messages. Both standards support Emergency Warning Function (EWF), which is capable to switch on all receivers in the area to accept warning message. Another possibility to transmit emergency warning messages, Emergency Warning System (EWS), is also described in the article.
